Charlton 2 Watford 3

Charlton manager Phil Parkinson admitted for the first time that there was an air of resignation around the club as the Addicks lurched closer still to relegation from the Coco-Cola Championship after Saturday's home defeat by fellow strugglers Watford.

It was the club's 21st defeat of the season, the most Charlton have lost in a campaign since the 1989-90 season.

"There is an air of resignation around the place, I cannot deny that," said Parkinson.

"We showed true grit on the road in securing points at Barnsley and Swansea. Then we lose two on the bounce against Doncaster and Watford.

"If I could put my finger on it I would have done so by now. Whatever happens from here on in, I want whoever wears the Charlton shirt to do so with pride."

After falling behind to Don Cowie's 17th minute goal, the Addicks hit back to take the lead through two-goal Tresor Kandol.

He equalised in the 21st minute when he took advantage of a mix-up between Lloyd Doyley and Adrian Mariappa.

In doing so, he became the first Charlton striker to score a goal from open play in 29 games.

Kandol, who returned to the side after visiting his sick son in France, was not finished and in the 33rd minute gave Charlton the lead with a near post header from Matthew Spring's corner.

Charlton who dominated for long periods in the first half, fell away badly in the second when they failed to impose themselves on the game.

Watford equalised in the 56th minute with a spectacular volley from substitute Grzegorz Rasiak and won the game in the 84th when skipper Mark Hudson's mistake let in Tamas Priskin to give the Hornets their fourth win in five games.

Charlton goalscorer Kandol admitted:"We have to keep on believing but the league table doesn't make good reading."

Addicks: Elliot, Butterfield, Ward, Hudson, Youga, Sam (Soares 84), Spring (Zhi 68), Racon, Bailey, Kandol, Burton (Todorov 74). Subs not used: Randolph, Holland.

Attendance: 20,052.
