Combe close with away win

Blaydon 10 Westcombe Park 27

Westcombe Park finished fifth in rugby's National League 2 after ending their campaign with an away win against Blaydon.

The North East opponents were beaten 27-10 as Combe capped their first season in the division with a win thanks to a superior second half.

Blaydon had gone ahead when a back-row move was followed up by a forward drive, which enabled Jason Smithson to go over and Richard Windle to convert.

It wasn’t long before Combe were on level terms when James Whittingham’s reverse flick found Rory Damant in support and he forced his way over.

The try was converted and the scores remained level at the break.

Blaydon were put under pressure straight from the off in the second half and the home side had a scrum under their posts. Smithson decided to pick up but Combe pressure saw them win possession and Whittingham sent over a drop goal.

Blaydon struck back with a penalty of their own but it proved to be their last points of the match.

Captain Tom Hayman went over after Combe’s scrum proved too strong and Whittingham added the extras.

Combe’s James Lindfield was a key man and he helped to disrupt Blaydon’s play and a Whittingham penalty was followed by a final try.

Jaco Du Toit scored under the posts, after being set up by Damant, and Whittingham added the extras.
