Cricket season ends with dour draw for Kent

Rob Ferley claimed career-best match figures of nine for 206

KENT wrapped up their championship campaign with a mundane, anti-climactic draw against wooden spoonists Middlesex.

Though Kent wrapped up the Middlesex first innings relatively quickly to have the visitors following on 190 in arrears, they were unable to roll them over for a second time to enforce a last match win.

Nick Compton, who suffered a fearful blow on the helmet when fielding at short-leg earlier in the game, recovered to score an attractive century in 214 minutes while Owais Shah looked back to his wristy best with 52 in 109 balls.

Compton eventually fell to Kent spinner Rob Ferley, who took nine wickets in the match including a career-best six for 136, then James Tredwell accounted for Shah.

But with overs running out David Nash and Paul Weekes, playing his last match before retirement, dug in to see the visitors through to a draw.

The day also marked a St Lawrence farewell for David Fulton, he led the side in the absence of Rob Key and Martin van Jaarsveld, and he received a standing ovation after leading the side off at tea.
