CHARLTON'S flurry of activity in the transfer market continued when the club clinched the signing of Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old American, who made eight first team appearances last season following his debut at Blackburn, has signed a deal which contains a clause allowing United to recall him in January, should the need arise. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson allowed Spector out on loan on the understanding that he will play regularly.

Addicks manager Alan Curbishley said: "Jonathan can play anywhere across the back four but made his United debut in the left-back slot. But he can also play on the right should he need to.

"I like his versatility and the fact that he's very quick and passes the ball well."

Born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Spector was spotted by United scouts playing for the Chicago Sockers and moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2003.

His agent Steve Kelly added: "Moving to Charlton provides Jonathan with a huge opportunity and he's very excited."

In a fortnight of intense transfer activity, Spector follows Darren Ambrose and former favourite Chris Powell into The Valley. More new signings are likely to follow with Charlton negotiating with Chelsea to bring in Russia midfielder Alexei Smertin to the club on a year's loan.

Though half a dozen clubs are thought to be interested in signing Smertin, the player is adamant that he wants to remain in London.

Meanwhile, Charlton have announced admission prices for the new season's opening home game against newly promoted Wigan on August 20.

Adults will be charged £25, £15 for over 65s and Under 18s and £5 Under 16s.
