Disappointing start for Gills

Ipswich Town 2 Gillingham 1

GILLINGHAM failed in their bid for a third succesive win at Portman Road.

Despite taking the lead through skipper Paul Smith in the 23rd minute, Gillingham conceded goals from Richard Naylor in the 35th minute and Dean Bowditch a minute into the second half.

The Gills best chance of an equaliser came in the 66th minute when Darren Byfield's header was saved by a diving Kelvin Davis.

Ipswich deserved their win and but for some goalkeeping heroics by Gillingham's Steve Banks they would have won by a bigger margin.
