Ford: Both ends of emotional scale in matter of days

ENJOYING the feeling of a good team victory is one of the most satisfying feelings in cricket, as was the case when Kent pulled off a magnificent team win over the very powerful Lancashire team.

Unfortunately, the nature of county cricket does not allow much time to enjoy the winning feeling.

Just three days after their Lancashire triumph, the lads were feeling pretty tired and extremely disappointed as the start to the NatWest Pro40 League did not go to plan and we are out of the Twenty20.

The win against Freddie Flintoff’s boys seems miles away and almost forgotten, but what a win it was.

Matthew Walker showed great class and determination in crafting a magnificent 197 and new overseas star Dwayne Bravo added his own blend of Caribbean class with an entertaining 76.

The lads put together two high quality bowling and fielding displays and set up a run chase which looked under control until we dropped our guard for a moment and nearly threw it all away in one poor session of batting.

It all ended well with Min Patel and Amjad Khan both showing mental strength and determination to get us home.

There were so many encouraging aspects to the performance that we travelled to Guildford full of positive feelings, but unfortunately we were far from our best against Surrey and could not lift the intensity of our game to the required level.

Surrey were ruthless and finished us off in pretty fine style.

With little time to think through the Surrey performance we found ourselves up against a very sharp Leicestershire side in the Twenty20 quarter final.

We got off to a shocker, and at 30-4 it was always going to be tough. I was pleased the lads fought hard to post 153 as so often teams lie down and die when in those sort of situations.

Victory was not to be and we found ourselves experiencing the other side of the emotional scale.
