Ford's Wings era starts with heavy defeat

TOUGH TASK: New Welling boss Andy Ford
TOUGH TASK: New Welling boss Andy Ford

Welling 2 Cambridge City 6

ANDY FORD'S first game in charge of Welling turned into a nightmare after Cambridge City hit his new side for six on Saturday.

The Wings trailed 2-0 inside 16 minutes and although they briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half, three late goals saw them remain teetering just above the Blue Square South relegation zone.

Welling went behind after five minutes when defender Sonny Cobbs put into his own net under no pressure.

It was 2-0 after 16 minutes when Michael Gash's free kick was too good for Jamie Turner.

Welling reduced the arrears on 24 minutes when Ellis Green crossed for Sam Gargan to head home, but Cambridge restored their two-goal advantage 11 minutes before the break through Ashley Fuller's wonder strike.

Gargan set up substitute Omari Coleman who curled home from inside the area to give the Wings hope on the hour, but a deflected effort from Josh Simpson put Cambridge 4-2 ahead with 14 minutes left and Neil Midgley quickly made it 5-2.

Welling's misery was complete in stoppage-time when Lee Roache waltzed past Francis Duku before slotting beyond Turner.

Ford faces a tough task to sort out the Welling defence before Tuesday's home clash with Newport.
