Gillingham 2 - 1 Colchester

A SELECTION of Gillingham supporters give their views on the last gasp opening day victory over Colchester United at Priestfield.

"The win was not a fair reflection of the game. Colchester were a solid unit with no frills and when they scored it came as no surprise. Afterwards they wasted a series of chances.

"I was encouraged by the performance of Jarvis when he came on while Byfield’s winner was a great finish. We still need two new strikers."
Team rating: 7
Star man: Jason Brown

"The first half was extremely poor but there was an improvement in the second half from both teams.

"Colchester deserved their lead and should have added a second before Gillingham got back into the game.

"Our equaliser was extremely well crafted and Byfield’s winner was excellent."
Team rating: 6
Star man: Michael Flynn

"Colchester were robbed because a draw would have been a fair result.

"I thought the crowd was very quiet, especially at the Rainham End but we received a wake-up call when Colchester scored and I thought there was a big improvement from Gillingham in the second half."
Team rating: 6
Star man: Andrew Crofts

"What a difference in standard between the Championship and League 1. If that’s the norm then we’ll have a good season.

"I think we’ll need three or four more games before we gel as a team but the signs are promising. The introduction of Matt Jarvis turned the game."
