QPR 1 Gillingham 1

GILLINGHAM hauled themselves back out of the relegation zone with a battling point at QPR on Tuesday night.

The draw, combined with Brigthon’s 3-0 defeat at Preston, moved Gills up to 21st place on goal difference with five games left to play.

Gills took the lead in the 17th minute at Loftus Road when Jay McEveley picked out Michael Flynn, who beat two defenders and slid the ball under QPR keeper Simon Royce.

But Rangers striker Paul Furlong got his team back on level terms when he finished off a good cross from Lee Cook in the 54th minute.

Jonathan Douglas had a header cleared off the line soon after but Gillingham couldn’t regain there lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Assistant manager Ronnie Jepson said: "I thought the performance was excellent, especially in the first half. We could have done with another goal because we expected them to come out flying after half time, which they did.

"We’re not getting carried away.We have two home games coming up and we have to make the most of them."

Gillingham return to action with the visit of Stan Ternent’s former club Burnley to Priestfield on Saturday.
