Walsall 2 - 0 Gillingham

WALSALL added to Gillingham’s list of defeats this season with a comfortable 2-0 victory at the Bescott Stadium on Saturday.

Paul Merson’s team took the lead on 15 minutes when Jon Wallis made a mistake by allowing a long ball upfield to bounce and Ishmel Demontagnac found himself in space and drove home past Gills keeper Tony Bullock.

The home side could have been ahead as early as the sixth minute but the recalled Danny Jackman was in the right place to clear off the line after on loan debutant Eric Skora’s corner had been headed goalwards by Chris Westwood.

Gills skipper Chris Hope came close with a looping header that clipped a post just before the break but that was as good as it got for the visitors in the first half.

Walsall doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Wallis was out-muscled on the wing by Ruben Larrosa and, although his cross was half cleared, the ball fell to Skora who finished well from the edge of the box.

Matt Jarvis had seen a shot saved Joe Murphy shortly before Walsall’s second goal but in truth the visitors rarely threatened.
