First year scholar Jack Payne has signed a professional deal with Gillingham.

The 17-year-old, who began his apprenticeship in the summer, has recently been involved with he first team squad after impressive displays in the youth and reserve teams.

Payne made his first senior appearance as a substitute in Gillingham’s 2-0 win over Chester in October.

Gills manager Mark Stimson moved quick to get the promising youngster on a contract.

“He could stay on the scholar scheme for the next 18 months but I think he’s that good he deserve to be a pro now,” said Stimson.

“The kid has something about him, he plays with an old head on young shoulders and in a couple of positions.”

Payne’s deal runs until the end of next season.
