Gorman: I’m mad not to want Gills job

DESPITE guiding the Gills to a crucial victory over Nottingham Forest caretaker manager John Gorman is still distancing himself from the job.

Goals from Darius Henderson and Tommy Johnson took Gills to within a point of safety but Gorman is putting his principles first.

He said: “The only reason I'm leaving is because I'm not going to come in here and take Andy's job, and surely anyone can understand.

“In different circumstances I'd have been dying for the job. But I don't think it's right that somebody should come in to help and then end up being the manager.

“I'm a man of principle. I've got to be honest and I must be mad, it's a great job for somebody and there are great facilities here. I've told him from day one that whatever happens I'm not going to take your job.

“I'm just delighted for me today at least I've helped the team and done what I've come here to do. If we had have lost today I think we'd have been in real big trouble."

The day has begun with a massive cheer for former manager Andy Hessenthaler and Gorman had little to do to fire up his players.

He said: “It was a very emotional day and it was great for me as the team was so motivated and they wanted it for Andy."

After conceding early Gorman changed things around drastically in the second half, with the substitutions helping to turn the game on its head.

“We made a couple of substitutions with the two at once and then Matt Jarvis coming on at the end gave us that little bit extra legs, and he was sparkling," he said.

“The crowd responded and the team responded in the second half and we battered them.

“We were very lucky to get the penalty to be honest which is nice for this team to get a bit of luck because the Gills have had an awful share of bad luck."

Speaking to KM-fm after the game against Forest, Gorman said the new manager would be likely to want to bring in his own assistant anyway...
