THE Boughton 10k race was a triumph for Canterbury Harriers, who took the men's title through Roy Palmer and another women's team prize. Invicta East Kent, led by runner-up Tatsuo Yoshiwara, won the men's prize.

There were 235 entries for the race and 224 finishers, plus a strong turn-out for the children's events.

Although entries was slightly down on last year, Angela Groombridge, of organisers Boughton School's parent-teacher association, said they were very happy with the record sum of £1,700 raised.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the cost of replacing 'temporary' buildings at the school, which have been in use for about 30 years.

Angela Groombridge added: "The feedback from the runners about the course was very good. They found the hills challenging but really enjoyed it."

Palmer completed the course in 34min 38sec, finishing as first veteran-40 as well as overall winner, ahead of Yoshiwara, in 35.40, with David Law, of Maidstone Harriers, third in 36.34.

The women's race turned into a battle between the winners of the last two years, with 2001 champion Helen Wheeler, of Ashford, regaining the title, with 38.17, from Nicki Barron, of Deal Tri, 40.02.

Third was Alison McCartney, of Thanet Road Runners, 45.31, fourth Lindsey Cameron in 45.37, and fifth Julie Collins-Ballands, 46.37, who led Canterbury Harriers to the team prize. She was supported by Wendy Smith, 47.50, and Anna Reuteisword, 50.19.

Invicta men were among the veteran honours, with Martyn Rouse first over-50 and Glyn Jenkins first over-60, while Georgina and Jonathan Twist both won among the children's age groups.
