England’s women were beaten on penalties in the final of the EuroHockey championships by Germany.

The German’s had already won the men’s competition before beating a women’s team containing two of Holcombe’s summer recruits.

An end-to-end thriller saw England and Germany share eight goals in the final of the competition.

Maddie Hinch lined up in goal for England while Laura Unsworth was also again in action for her country. But the Holcombe pair had to settle for silver.

Germany took the title on penalties, winning the shoot-out 2-0.

Hinch was named as goalkeeper of the tournament following some top performances throughout the week, which included helping England to beat the Netherlands in their semi-final match.

The men’s team, meanwhile, which included Holcombe pair Dan Fox and Barry Middleton, finished in fourth place.

They lost 3-2 to the Netherlands in the bronze place play-off, having earlier been beaten 3-0 by Belgium in Friday night’s semi-final.

Upbeat England captain Middleton said: “That was probably our best performance of the tournament, which is great to do against such quality opposition.

“It was pretty gutting not to get anything out of the game. I think we had enough of the play that we could have done that and at least taken it to a shoot-out.

“There’s a lot of positive stuff that we can take from this tournament, but playing teams like the Netherlands we don’t want to just be saying ‘we played well’, we want to be winning.”
