Nottingham Forest v Gillingham

FEELING as I do now, it's still hard to believe that we were just five minutes away from safety against Cardiff on Saturday.

The party atmosphere around Priestfield became akin to that at a wake after Paul Parry's late goal meant that we've got a second horrible last day in a row ahead of us.

It hadn't been a good performance against Cardiff, nor had it been a good game of football, but it really looked like Matty Jarvis' goal had secured our spot in the Championship for next year.

The goal we conceded was disappointing, but I was more let down by the lack of urgency after it - we still had five minutes left to go all out in attack and get that priceless win, but we almost seemed content to take a point.

Still, at least it's in our own hands. However, it's not as favourable as last year when we escaped on the last day at Stoke.

If Crewe win, a draw will only be good enough for us if Brighton lose, while a loss is just unthinkable.

Ideally, Crewe won't beat Coventry, but life as a Gills fan isn't that simple, is it?

Our opponents, of course, have already taken the dreaded drop, but I fear that could work against us - with nothing to play for and futures to think about, Forest will certainly be a very tough proposition as they look to end a poor season on a high.

Us fans have an important part to play - it is vital that we get behind the team for the whole 90 minutes.

Let's not worry ourselves about taunting our opponents about their own relegation, and most importanly, let's get behind the lads.

It doesn't matter if you think Byfield is a waste of money, or that Nosworthy is just playing out his time at the club.

The players, the management and us all want the same thing on Sunday, another year in the Championship, so please let's get behind all the lads from first whistle until last.

It's going to be a very fraught afternoon, and I've been growing my fingernails all week so that I don't reach the bone while I'm nervously chewing them between 1pm and 3pm!

Let's just hope that the lads can give it one final push and secure our Championship status for at least one more year.
