Hope: We'll bounce back

CHRIS HOPE: "Tuesday's result was just a blip"

WOUNDED pride will spur Gillingham at Grimsby on Saturday as they attempt to make amends for Tuesday’s 4-0 home defeat by Wolves.

Defender Chris Hope, who must subdue Grimsby's free-scoring striker Steve Kabba at Blundell Park, confessed the leaking of four goals at home had hurt the team’s defensive pride.

Hope, who spent seven seasons with Grimsby's neighbours Scunthorpe and knows several of Saturday's opponents, has taken Tuesday's defeat as a personal affront.

He said: "Although I'm convinced Tuesday's result was just a blip and the gaffer said afterwards that he couldn't fault the effort, I don't think we can use the fact that we played most of the game with 10 men as an excuse for conceding four goals, especially at home. That really hurt.

“The best thing we can do now is bounce back and keep a clean sheet at Grimsby. I think Tuesday’s events have made us all doubly determined."

Barring further injury problems in training, Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler is set to name an unchanged side to face the Mariners.
