Kedwell fires Welling to victory

WINNER: Danny Kedwell
WINNER: Danny Kedwell

Dorchester 0 Welling United 1

WELLING'S second-half dominance finally paid off on Tuesday night when Danny Kedwell scored the only goal at Dorchester with 14 minutes remaining.

The Wings were camped in the home side's half for most of the second half but were frustrated by poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Simon Evans before Kedwell found a way through with his 23rd goal of the season.

Substitute Andrew Sam did the hard work, cutting in from the left-hand side before Kedwell fired home the loose ball as Dorchester failed to clear.

It was no more than Welling deserved as they ended a run of three games without a Conference South win.

Without the suspended Steve Perkins and the injured Steve Harper, manager Adrian Pennock shuffled his depleted squad with Che Stadhart and Tony Battersby coming into the starting line-up.

The first half saw few openings of any note but Welling took command after the break.

They had five clear chances in a 12-minute spell when they should have made the breakthrough.

Stadhart twice fired over when well-placed, Battersby saw his effort cleared off the line and Kedwell was denied by Evans.

Once ahead, Welling comfortably held on despite some questionable refereeing decisions, and they nearly added a second late on through skipper Jamie Day.

The win lifted Welling back into the Conference South play-off places.
