KENT strolled to a 10-wicket win over Hampshire in Tuesday's opening pre-season friendly in Canterbury.

Chasing the visitors modest 50-over total of 137 all out, Kent raced to victory with 30 overs in hand after opening partners and England colleagues Geraint Jones and Rob Key knocked off the runs in express time.

Key was unbeaten on 70 and Jones finished with 59 not out as Kent made short work of the run chase.

Earlier, Kent's bowlers had made the most of a slow early-season pitch as new boy Simon Cook marked his Kent bow with three for 22.

Spinner Rob Ferley also bagged three for 27 but the best stint came from South African-born Matt Dennington with three for 10 from 7.2 overs.

KENT'S opening warm-up game, a Twenty20 Clash with an Old Kent XI on Monday was abandoned after 21 overs of the Twenty20 clash.

With short boundaries and the new lime tree making its debut inside the ropes, Kent amassed 232 for two based on another big opening stand worth 137 between Jones and Rob Key.

Jones was finally stumped for 70 but Key reached 103 in just 58 minutes and from only 52 balls.

The reply was merely two balls old before rain forced the abandonment.

The county are next in action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when Derbyshire provide the opposition.

Friday and Saturday will be played to first-class regulations with 96 overs per day starting at 10.45am, while Sunday's match will be a 45-over per side clash.
