Charlton Athletic 2 - 1 Leyton Orient

A LAST minute goal from substitute Jay Bothroyd earned Charlton a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup against Leyton Orient at The Valley on Saturday.

Bothroyd found a way past Orient keeper Glyn Garner after Matt Holland had rolled a free-kick into his path. It was cruel on the League 2 side who deserved to take Alan Curbishley's side to a replay.

Any nerves Charlton may have had should have evaporated after just seven minutes when, after Darren Bent had been fouled by John Mackie, Darren Ambrose swung over a free-kick and Jonathan Fortune headed into the net.

But Orient came within a whisker of an equaliser in first-half stoppage time, but Joe Keith's shot clipped the top of Thomas Myhre's crossbar and went over.

Just before that Gary Alexander had come close on three occasions as the visitors came back into the match.

The leveller the underdogs were threatening came eight minutes into the second half when Lee Steele got on the end of Keith's pass to send a toe-poked shot past Myhre.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Fortune, Hreidarsson, Powell, Ambrose, Kishishev (Thomas 63), Holland, Hughes (Smertin 63), Bartlett (Bothroyd 63), Bent
Subs Not Used: Andersen, Spector.
