Charlton Athletic 2 Aston Villa 1

SUBSTITUTE Bryan Hughes scored his first since April with a last minute winner that earned Charlton their first win under new manager Alan Pardew at The Valley on Saturday.

With the Addicks heading for a second home draw in four days, The Valley erupted as Hughes headed home at the far post after Hermann Hreidarsson had flicked on a cross from substitute Jerome Thomas.

Hughes afterwards praised the galvanising affect that Pardew had brought to the dressing-room.

"He's made a big impact very quickly because he hasn't had a lot of time. We should have beaten Fulham on Wednesday but he never dwelt on that and we just concentrated on beating Villa."

Charlton fell behind to Gareth Barry's disputed 39th minute penalty after Hreidarsson had tripped the Villa captain.

Leading scorer Darren Bent equalised with a diving header in the 57th minute before Villa were reduced to 10-men with Barry's dismissal after he brought down Dennis Rommedahl who was clear on goal.

Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor missed an 89th minute sitter before Hughes settled it.

Attendance: 26,699.
