Magical Martin puts Bath to the sword

Fantastic hat-trick: Ryan Martin
Fantastic hat-trick: Ryan Martin

Bath City 0 Welling 4

A devastating hat-trick by new signing Ryan Martin led Welling to an opening day victory in Blue Square South on Saturday.

Martin only put pen to paper for the Wings on Friday but he slotted in perfectly with a match-winning performance.

Welling went ahead after 14 minutes when Ellis Green dispossessed Bath skipper Jim Rollo and his cross went behind both Charlie Sheringham and Joe Healy before Martin arrived unmarked to drive home.

The home side had two good chances to equalise but were made to pay on the stroke of half-time when Martin scored his second with a free kick from the edge of the area.

Sonny Cobbs chipped wide at the start of the second half before the impressive Martin completed his treble on the hour with another free kick - which this time went through the hands of keeper Paul Evans.

Substitute Sol Pinnock rounded off a memorable afternoon for the Wings when he scored direct from a free kick seven minutes from time.

Welling are at home to Braintree on Tuesday.
