GILLINGHAM assistant manager Mick Docherty has hinted some of the trialists who played in the club’s 0-0 draw at Ryman League Premier Division Ramsgate on Wednesday could be given another chance to win a permanent contract at Priestfield.

Docherty and first-team coach Iffy Onoura fielded a number of trialists and youth team players, including 20-year-old goalkeeper Scott Davies from Morecambe and former Valencia midfielder Pablo Rodriguez.

Former Charlton trainee Alistair John also played along with former Rushden & Diamonds winger Tyrone Berry, with the pair both impressing Docherty.

He said: "I thought it went well for a first game so soon after coming back. They’ve only been back for five days so it is difficult to drop into match mode.

A couple of them showed nice touches and there was a nice turn of pace from the two wide lads. Overall it was a game we should have won on chances."

There were few clear cut chances created by either side in the first-half with the best falling to John who saw his shot from inside the area sail wide of the post.

Docherty could not confirm whether the club will take another look at Rodriguez.

He said: "I don’t know the formalities of how he came over. All I know is I picked him up at Gatwick last week and he came to train with us for a week, play a game and then see what happens.

Both sides failed to break the deadlock in the second half with Gillingham’s best chance coming 25 minutes from the end when Berry headed over from Hamilton’s cross.

Former Gillingham striker Bas Savage was spotted in the crowd at the Southwood Stadium but Docherty was quick to play down any speculation linking him with a move back to Kent.

He said: "He was great in the dressing room when he was with us last season and I’m delighted he’s gone on to good things.

"I think the fact we’ve got Delroy Facey in and Gary Mulligan means I wouldn’t have thought it would happen but you can never say never in football."
