GILLINGHAM coach Wayne Jones has backed out-of-contract Brentford striker Lloyd Owusu as the player to sharpen the club's attack as they look to compensate for the loss of jailed top scorer Marlon King.

Owusu, who has a career record of a goal every two games, is available on a Bosman free after rejecting Brentford's final contract offer. Last week the 25-year-old was shown around Priestfield by player-manager Andy Hessenthaler before he left for a summer holiday.

“Lloyd Owusu would be a wonderful signing,” said Jones. “He is a proven goalscorer in Division 2 and had a terrific season last year. He's a good player we’re definitely interested in.”

The Owusu option is one that suits Gillingham who would not have to pay a fee while his wages would be nothing like the £16,000 a week another transfer target Rod Wallace is on at Bolton. But despite denials, Millwall are thought to be stepping up their interest in Owusu.
