Scally plays waiting game over contracts

PAUL SCALLY: "New contracts will be sorted as and when it’s appropriate"

GILLINGHAM chairman Paul Scally has said that players contracts will not be sorted out until he knows what division the club are playing in next season.

A total of 12 current Gills players are out of contract in the summer but only one – Mamady Sidibe – has been offered on a new deal.

That leaves Nyron Nosworthy, John Hills, Barry Ashby, Ian Cox, Nicky Southall, Bertrand Bossu, Mark Saunders, Matt Bodkin, Jones Awuah, Dean Beckwith and skipper Paul Smith’s future uncertain.

Smith has said that the likelihood of him ending his eight-year spell at the club increased the longer he went without a contract offer.

But Scally said: "New contracts will be sorted as and when it’s appropriate and it’s not appropriate right now when we are trying to stay up. Once we know what division we are playing in next season it will make the situation much clearer."

Sidibe, who has been linked with Wigan and Sheffield United, has yet to respond to his offer.

But Scally said he was hopeful the Mali international would sign, adding he had yet to have an inquiry about the striker from another club.
