Barnsley 3 Charlton 0

Charlton's end of season lurched from bad to worse with Saturday's unacceptable defeat against Barnsley at Oakwell.

At the final whistle Charlton supporters were left with the sole consolation of a marvellous debut from 16-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who was the team's one and only shining light.

Shelvey, at 16 years, 59 days made history by becoming the club's youngest first team debutant, beating Paul Konchesky who made his debut at 16 years 93 days. Throughout, he never looked overcome by the occasion and went close to a goal in the 34th minute when Rob Kozluk cleared off the line.

Pardew, who expected a positive reaction to the previous week's defeat at Quuens Park Rangers, said: "I didn't learn anything from that performance that I didn't know already. It's extremely disappointing but there was no real focus for us, which made it difficult.

"But we had the consolation of Jonjo Shelvey's very bright debut. That performance was a major highlight for us.

"What we need to do now is make sure we protect him because there is no way he will play every game next season. Even so, at a tender age, I feel he has a big part to play."

Pardew also gave a first team debut to 18-year-old Maidstone youngster Scott Wagstaff who replaced Jose Semedo in the 65th minute.

Former Charlton winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce shoved the skids under his old club in the 12th minute when he beat goalkeeper Nicky Weaver with an angled drive.

Barnsley increased their lead in the 34th minute when Lewin Nyatanga bundled the ball over from close range after Dennis Souza headed on Bobby Hassell's cross.

Barnsley, who needed the win to ensure Championship survival, were always in control and it came as no surprise when Jon Macken added a third in the 70th minute.

Charlton's best effort came from skipper Matt Holland whose 87th-minute free-kick was tipped over the bar by Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele.
