MARK STIMSON is expected to be unveiled as the new Gills boss within days.

The 39-year-old moved a step closer to becoming Gillingham manager when he resigned from his post at Stevenage on Wednesday.

Although Stimson has been linked as a candidate for the vacant Gillingham position, Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace has consistently stated he would not allow his under-contract manager to leave.

Despite this, Stimson himself has not commented on the speculation linking him with the job. But he moved a step closer to moving to Priestfield when he sent a letter of resignation to Mr Wallace.

Mr Wallace said Stimson took legal advice before making his decision and admitted he was unaware of his former employee’s next move.

He said: "We don’t know where he’s going but he feels that this action is in the best interests of his future career and only history will show if he was right.

"I think it’s been clear to everyone over the past few weeks that events outside the club have been the major contributor in his decision to resign but we will have to wait and see."
