Stimson targets Bolton youngster

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson will attempt to lure Bolton youngster Michael Burns to the club after failing in his pursuit of Kevin Maher.

Maher had been a long term target for Stimson but on Wednesday the 31-year-old snubbed a two year contract at Gillingham for a one year deal with League 1 side Oldham.

It was a bitter blow for Stimson but he wasted no time in looking for another target and is now in talks with Bolton in the hope of getting the 19-year-old former Liverpool trainee to join for the remainder of pre-season.

“He might come in for a few more days before we make a decision about taking him on loan. He’s one who gives us balance in the middle and has an eye for a pass,” said Stimson.

“He can pick a pass and with him being left footed he can play things blind and that’s maybe because of his upbringing.

“You don’t stay at Liverpool for six years if you don’t have a brain and can’t see a pass. He could be a nice addition to us.”

Burns was offered a deal by MK Dons but declined the offer after the League 1 side wanted him to play on the wing. Stimson had a brief look at him during a training match on Tuesday and is keen to see more.
