DRIVERS from the county are likely to feature strongly in Saturday’s championship motor race meeting at Lydden, organised by the South Eastern Motor Sport Enthusiasts Club.

Nigel Craig, of Elham, will aim to retain his Intermediate Saloons championship title when he takes part in the SEMSEC Saloon and Sports Car Championship event along with his son Stephen, the current Super Saloons champion. They both drive Ford RS2000 Escorts.

Their near-neighbour from Bladbean, Tony Skelton, drives the Barretts of Canterbury supercharged MINI Cooper S and will be taking part in the same race as well as the SE Saloon and Sports Car Challenge and the John Taylor Handicap event.

Former Lydden champion Julian Sage, from Chatham, will be keen to score another victory with his Caterham R500 in the Sports Racing Car Championship as well as the SE Saloon and Sports Car event, but he faces strong opposition from Tony Halliwell (Bexleyheath), Mark Burton (Biggin Hill), Leigh Parkes (Sutton) and a host of other drivers in Westfields and Radicals.

There will also be two races for the SEMSEC Open Single Seater Challenge.

Saturday's action starts with a track day event during the morning followed by the first of seven races after lunch.

Lydden Circuit is on the A2, eight miles south of Canterbury. Admission is £8 (£6 for senior citizens). Parking, paddock and entry for accompanied children is free.
