Peter Taylor believes fan pressure is making things worse at Gillingham.

Taylor ended his interim management role on Saturday with a clear message for those fans who have voiced their criticism from the sidelines.

He said: “I don’t think they are helping the cause and there are too many that want to have a go at the manager, interim or not, or the players and I don’t think that is helping the players settle.

“I am only being honest on that and I am never going to be a yes man. They could be a touch more patient because of the situation.”

Taylor came in on an interim basis, days after Martin Allen was sacked from his post as manager. Two wins and two defeats followed in League 1 as the interim boss looked to make changes to tactics and style.

He said: “The players are trying as hard as they can but they also have to hold their hands up as well because a lot of their performances are not good enough.

“You get certain people that enjoy (to boo) and they have to be realistic.

“It’s not going to happen straight away, it’s going to take a bit of time. Certain people will be patient and certain people won’t.

“Supporters pay their money and they can raise their voice, there is no problem on that but it doesn’t mean we have to agree with them.”

The Gills escaped with a draw in the FA Cup first round against non-league Brackley Town on Saturday but Taylor knows at Gillingham’s level, performances can be hit and miss.

He said: “If you are at Premier League level you might have a clue what they are going to do every week but when you are League 1 or League 2 level, they are more inconsistent.

“Sometimes players have a few more nerves than we would want them to. There is a lack of quality at the minute but not a lack of effort.”
