Gillingham were beaten heavily at the weekend but Martin Allen believes harder tests are around the corner.

Wolves hit four past Allen’s men at Molineux as Gillingham finished another game without a goal.

But a difficult start to the season isn’t likely to get any easier this weekend as Allen is tipping Brentford, who will visit Priestfield, as potential title contenders.

The Gills boss said: “I choked on my cornflakes when I saw Wolves signed a midfielder for £750,000 from Sheffield (United in Kevin McDonald). Blimey, he is a good player as well but he wasn’t even on their bench.

“They have some fantastic players but that doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t scare me or faze me. Bristol City had similar type players in their group.

“We play Brentford next week and they have also spent a lot of money on players and lost in the play-off final last year. Brentford will probably be the overall out and out favourites to win this division.

“We have them coming thick and fast but the important thing, as I have always said is take it in our stride, deal with it and move onto the next stage.”
