Weakened Welling face Trophy test

Wings defender Sonny Cobbs is suspended against Hednesford
Wings defender Sonny Cobbs is suspended against Hednesford

Hednesford v Welling

Below-strength Welling travel to Hednesford in the second round of the FA Trophy on Saturday without a number of key players.

Boss Andy Ford is missing the suspended Sonny Cobbs, Moses Ademola who has been recalled by Brentford, Jack Parkinson who is cup-tied - and a number of his squad are struggling with flu and sickness.

The game is in doubt due to the weather but Ford knows that when it gets underway, the Wings will face a tough examination against the Unibond League Premier Division leaders.

"It's a difficult game for us," said Ford. "They are top of their league, they score lots of goals going forward but also let a few in.

"I'd planned to have them watched for the last three games but they've all been called off. It's a case of going into the dark."

Cobbs' suspension could prove the most crucial of blows but Ford knows how he is going to cover the left-back role.

He added: "I know what I'm going to do there now but I'm going to keep that quiet for now."

As for the chances of running a successful league campaign alongside an extended FA Trophy run, Ford admitted that it would be "impossible".

"That's not being negative, just realistic," said the Wings boss. "With Moses going out, the suspensions and Jack Parkinson cup-tied, it has already stretched the squad.

"Any new players are likely to be cup-tied but that's not to say that we don't want to go as far as we can in the FA Trophy because we know that it brings money into the club the further you go."
