West Bromwich Albion 1 - Gillingham 0

Gillingham's Division 1 status remains in doubt after a late goal from West Brom's Lee Hughes condemned them to their fifth straight defeat.

Hughes finished from close range with 11 minutes left on the clock after substitute Lloyd Dyer had fired a speculative shot into a crowded goalmouth.

The goal was tough on Gillingham, who had worked hard all game to frustrate a team 19 places above them in the table.

Andy Hessenthaler's men created little in terms of goalscoring opportunities themselves but also restricted the home side to long shots and half chances.

But Hughes' late winner meant it was all for nothing and Gillingham now lie just one point above the drop zone.
