WELLING United earned a creditable draw against Premiership side Charlton in a friendly on Thursday night.

But for a late equaliser by defender Luke Young, the Wings would have inflicted an embarrassing defeat on their more illustrious opponents.

Matt Carruthers gave the home side the lead after 76 minutes.

But the Nationwide Conference South side failed to hold out and Young slotted in from six yards to save Charlton's blushes with eight minutes remaining.

Addicks boss Alan Curbishley gave debuts to new signings Darren Ambrose and Darren Bent.
