Wings lucky to escape with Trophy replay

Welling 1 AFC Totton 1

Welling's dismal record in cup competitions this season continued when they were held to an FA Trophy draw on Saturday.

Visitors AFC Totton, who play two levels below the Wings, had enough chances to have won the tie outright as Andy Ford's injury-hit Welling team held on for the draw.

Ford drafted in keeper Clark Masters on loan from Southend and also fielded former Gravesend full-back Lee Protheroe.

It had all started so brightly for the Wings who led in the 10th minute through Charlie Sheringham's close range finish.

Lee Blackburn missed a good chance just before the half hour but that was the total sum of Welling's attacking efforts.

At the other end, Totton striker Mark Osman went clean through but prodded the ball wide and the same player was denied by keeper Masters just before half-time.

The second half was one-way traffic and Osman was again guilty of missing all the opportunities.

He headed wide from Mike Gosney's corner but Gosney showed him the way to goal 20 minutes from time with a stunning 25-yard free-kick.

Osman, who gave Matthew McEntegart, a torrid time still wasted three more chances as he was twice denied by Masters and then failed to find the target on another occasion.

The replay is on Tuesday.

It was even worse news for Bromley though who crashed out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat at Southern League Premier side Swindon Supermarine.

The winner came in the 21st minute when Nick Stanley fired home after the Lillywhites failed to deal with a long throw-in.

Bromley had Mark Corneille dismissed shortly after half-time to rub salt into the wounds on a poor afternoon for Mark Goldberg's men.
