St Albans City 3 - 1 Welling United

WELLING slumped to their third defeat of the season in the Nationwide Conference South after a first haklf disaster at Clarence Park on Saturday.

The Wings fell behind as early as the ninth minute when Matthew Hann found Simon Martin who rounded keeper Jamie Turner to score despite looking suspiciously offside.

The Wings were level on 25 minutes when Jamie Day’s left-wing cross was missed by Rob Owen at the near post but somehow found its way past keeper Paul Bastock.

St Albans regained the lead five minutes later when Tom Davis was not closed down and his right-foot shot took a wicked deflection to deceive Turner.

It went from bad to worse on 37 minutes when the impressive Lee Clarke saw his left-foot chip hit the cross bar and Dean Cracknell was on hand to nod home the rebound.

Welling should have pulled one back midway through the second half as Danny Kedwell, Leon Solomon and Day all wasted golden opportunities.

But Wings fans will have been left questioning the tactics as it took until 13 minutes from time for the first substitution to appear.

Welling’s day was summed up in the 90th minute when Lee Shearer’s headed over from Day’s free-kick with keeper Bastock flapping at thin air.
