Welling 1 Havant & W 1

WELLING were twiced denied by the woodwork as they had to settle for a point at home to Havant in Blue Square South.

The Wings trailed at half-time, despite dominating the first 45 minutes, and had Tony Sinclair's leveller early in the second half to thank for a share of the spoils.

Once Jamie Slabber headed over early on for Havant, it was all Welling.

Ross Montague struck the inside of the post on 21 minutes after clever play between Adam Cottrell and Marlon Patterson.

At the other end, Slabber was fortunate to stay on the pitch after a high and late challenge on keeper Clark Masters was only punished with a yellow card.

Manager Neil Smith was denied by keeper Kevin Scriven before Patterson's brilliant 37th-minute volley came back off the crossbar.

Havant took advanatge of sloppy Welling marking to score after 41 minutes, Andy Gurney heading in Brett Poate's free-kick.

Welling equalised just two minutes after half-time when Smith's effort from Patterson's corner was cleared off the line but Tony Sinclair volleyed home the loose ball via the underside of the bar.

Patterson dragged his 67th-minute shot wide of the target before Havant had a goal ruled out for offside.

Both sides went close late on but lacked the final ball having worked good positions.
