Josh Wright has revealed the lure of promotion and the chance to work with some familiar faces at Gillingham was a chance too good to turn down.

The Charlton youngster, who already has extensive experience in League 2, moved to Priestfield until the end of the season after snubbing moves elsewhere.

Earlier this season, Wright played on loan for Brentford and last season he won the young player-of-the-year award at Barnet during a longer loan stint at Underhill.

Ironically for Wright, Gillingham’s next two games are away to Brentford tomorrow (Saturday) and home to Barnet next weekend.

Wright said: “I would have stayed at Brentford longer had Charlton not taken me back to play in the first team.

“I know the team well but there are no friends in football and as a footballer you play to win. It will be weird playing against Barnet, too, but I’m playing for Gillingham now and want to win.

“I was impressed with Gillingham – they are the biggest team of the three.

“I had quite a few offers but as soon as Gillingham came up it was an appetising offer.

“I’ve known Mark Stimson for a long time and I’ve worked with Mark Robson for many years.

“The team are also playing for something and could get automatic promotion or a play-off spot.

“Much as Charlton are a big club, it looks like they are going down, although I hope they turn it around. I just wanted to play and the main thing for me is to get 90 minutes football.”

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer and is still waiting to hear if he has a long-term future at The Valley.

Wright had his first training session with the Gills on Tuesday and he knows he’ll have a battle on his hands to make it into the side.

He added: “I don’t expect to walk straight into the team – I’ll have to fight for my place.”
