12 arrested in series of drug swoops

A DOZEN people were arrested when Kent Police carried out a series of dawn raids marking the start of a major anti-drugs drive in Maidstone.

The people in custody comprise seven men and four women, all of whom have been arrested for drug-related offences, including the cultivation of cannabis, possession with intent to supply and possession of controlled substances.

A loft stuffed full of pots of germinating cannabis plants was among the finds made by officers from Mid Kent when they began the operation at about 6.30am on Tuesday.

In all nine properties were searched in the two-phase operation. The properties were residential dwellings and were all located in the county town, including the Tovil, Parkwood and Fant areas.

Drugs, including cannabis and amphetamine, were seized during the raids, along with property that is believed to be stolen.

Around 40 police officers and two drugs dogs were involved in the operation which was intelligence based and aimed at continuing to tackle drug use and supply in and around Maidstone as part of the Safer Streets initiative.

So far, three people have been cautioned and one man has been charged with possession of drugs. The man, aged 38, has been bailed to appear in court on February 13.

Maidstone Borough Commander, Ch Insp Ian Hall, said: “These results send out a clear message to those people who are involved in drug use in the area that their behaviour will not be tolerated by police, or by partner agencies.

"Action will be taken against those who are involved in drug related crime, while help will also be given to them wherever possible. This operation is part of an ongoing initiative to tackle drugs in Maidstone.
