Dogs found dumped in ‘appalling’ condition in Hogbarn Lane, Harrietsham now unrecognisable

Two dogs found abandoned and “almost bald” in a country lane are now almost unrecognisable following an incredible recovery.

Male toy poodle William and female chocolate labrador Poppy were discovered on Saturday, July 15, in Hogbarn Lane, Harrietsham, and were believed to have experienced “chronic and prolonged neglect for months”.

When found, they were taken to a vet by members of the public where it was confirmed the dogs were emaciated. They were also suffering from severe mange and poor dental health.

The duo, thought to both be around nine years old, were handed over to the RSPCA for intensive care.

But now, three months later, they have made a miraculous recovery and are ready to find a new home.

Their fur has grown back and they are healthy weights.

Hannah White from RSPCA Kent Isle of Thanet Branch said: “Poppy and William are an incredibly special pair.

“They have come such a long way in three months and it breaks our hearts to think back to when they were first rescued – they had been through so much trauma and were extremely withdrawn and depressed.

“It was clear they had been used for breeding and were likely no longer fulfilling their purpose, before they were cruelly abandoned.

“But thanks to Newnham Court Vets and their nurse who has fostered the pair for several months, as well as our inspector Kirsten Ormerod, today, they are full of beans and completely unrecognisable.

“These two have been through so much together and are completely bonded – William has very poor sight, so Poppy acts as his guide dog as well as his companion; they are completely inseparable, so we’d like them to be adopted together.

“If you have a special place in your home and your heart for this senior pair, who have overcome so much together, we’d love to hear from you this Adoptober.

“Poppy and William are bursting with character, and have lots of love to give - they just want to finally relax in a loving and cosy forever retirement home.”

Both dogs still need more dental treatment and Poppy needs an operation before she can be rehomed. Donations can be made here.

RSPCA inspector Kirsten Ormerod has been investigating Poppy and William’s abandonment for several months. Anyone with information should call 0300 123 8018.
