Care home resident celebrates 100th birthday at Invicta Court in Pond Way, Maidstone

A care home resident who celebrated her 100th birthday has revealed the secret to living a long and happy life.

Madge Lumley, who lives at Care UK’s Invicta Court, in Pond Way, Maidstone, says you have to "be a bit cheeky, have a good sense of humour, and hear what you want to hear".

With both Indian and French heritage, Madge was born on October 26, 1922, in Calcutta, India.

In 1947, when she was 25, Madge and her family left India before the partition between India and Pakistan was erected. Leaving most of their belongings behind, they sailed to England and eventually settled in Bristol.

Reflecting back on her favourite memories, Madge recalls fondly the first time she stepped onto a plane to meet her grandson in Kenya.

After the flight she was inspired to travel and would regularly visit Kenya and other countries – including South Africa – to visit family.

Madge’s daughter, Ann Freeman, moved the family to Kent a few years ago when her mum needed care from Bristol.

They all now live nearby, including Madge's three grandsons and five great-grandchildren, who regularly visit her at the home.

To celebrate her birthday, the Invicta Court decorated a lounge with balloons and banners in a Bollywood theme. The home’s head chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy alongside an Indian-themed platter.

She was joined by her relatives, friends and the extended family of Invicta Court team members and residents.

They welcomed live entertainment from Bollywood Blast, who performed a dance routine for Madge to enjoy.

She also received a birthday card from the newly appointed King Charles III.

Home manager, Sara Barbosa, said: “Here at Invicta Court, we always like to throw a party for special milestones, and Madge’s 100th birthday certainly called for a celebration.

“It was fantastic to help her celebrate this incredible milestone with her family and friends here at Invicta Court with a surprise afternoon tea party and to raise a glass to her fantastic milestone, so cheers to Madge.”
