They managed to secure the vessel, understood to have broken from its moorings before becoming wedged under the Broadway bridge, to the river bank.

A spokesman for KFRS said: "We were called to reports of a boat that was adrift and became stuck underneath a bridge at The Broadway in Maidstone.

"Two fire engines attended and crews assisted to secure the boat to river bank. The owner will be arranging recovery when conditions are safer."

Firefighters were able to leave the scene at around 1.15pm.

Waters on the Medway have been high today, with social media users sharing pictures of water breaching the banks of the river in places.
