IT IS important to ensure that businesses are warned of the impending smoking ban. But Maidstone council is perhaps taking its responsibilities just a bit too far.

It has written to "The Occupier or Owner" of bus stop number 40 in London Road, warning of the change in the law that comes into effect on Sunday.

The letter was delivered to Martin Pember who lives at 145 London Road.

He said: "I guess the postman put it through my door because he couldn’t find the letter-box at the bus shelter."

A Maidstone council spokesman said the bus stop had simply not been manually deleted from a list of businesses and business interests.

He said: "The cost is little more than that of a second class stamp."
