It's not every day a member of the Royal Family drops in for tea at your house.

But that’s what happened to Mrs Booth in her council house in Maidstone back in the 1930s.

The Duchess of Kent and her entourage popped round to Mrs Booth’s new home when she paid a visit to the County Town in July 1936.

The Duchess had already visited the British Legion Village, Aylesford, Dunk Memorial Hall, headquarters of the Maidstone and District Corps of the St John Ambulance Brigade, and the Old Palace, where she had seen the work of the maternity and infant clinic.

After being driven past cheering crowds to the Foster Clark estate, the Duchess called on Mrs Booth, wife of timekeeper GS Booth, from the Maidstone and District Bus Company, who showed her around her council house, as this Kent Messenger picture shows.
