Jay Saunders is prepared to make further changes to his Maidstone squad as they bid to keep pace with the Ryman League, Division 1 South leaders.

After adding centre-back Gavin Greenfield – who made a scoring debut in Wednesday’s Kent Senior Cup 6-3 defeat to Dover – to his ranks on Monday, the Stones boss, pictured, remains on the lookout for a new midfielder and could move on one or two players to free up space for the new arrivals.

Saunders said: "Gavin’s brought competition at the back and he’s left-footed. I do like to have a left-footer and a right-footer back there.

"That’s not it yet. I’m hoping to have a midfielder in place before the weekend and I might have to let one or two go."

Greenfield, captain of the British Army team and based with the 36 Royal Engineers in Maidstone, has been with Division 1 North Great Wakering and was recommended by Saunders’ former team-mate and boss at Margate, Iain O’Connell.

Stones visit struggling Whyteleafe on Saturday looking to make it eight league wins in a row as they sit five points behind leaders Dulwich with a game in hand.

Saunders said: "Everyone beats everyone else in this league so even though you’re playing a bottom-half team, you can always come a cropper. I have watched Whyteleafe and they were solid with a couple of pacy players."

Ellis Green will be out for at least another three weeks with a hamstring tear and is Saunders’ only absentee.
