Man jailed for sex attack in toilets

A drunken pervert who groped two women in a nightclub toilet cubicle in separate incidents has been jailed for three years.

Deleon Greaves was told by Judge Jeremy Carey that it was a terrifying experience for a woman to be trapped in a confined space when confronted by an intoxicated stranger.

The young victims had gone separately to Mu Mu’s night club in Week Street, Maidstone.

The first woman was in the cubicle, which had a faulty lock, when Greaves burst in saying he needed to hide there. But he then went towards her and tried to touch her.

It was her good fortune, said the judge, that she managed to get away before being seriously assaulted.

Shortly afterwards, the second woman was in the same cubicle when the 28-year-old electrician and part-time DJ walked in exposing himself.

She told him to get out and tried to push him away but he managed to lock the door.

He pushed her into a corner and assaulted her.

She managed to get away and told her friend someone had tried to rape her.

Greaves, of Plaistow, east London, denied two charges of sexual assault but was convicted by a jury.

He claimed he was so drunk he had no memory of the attacks.

Laurie-Ann Power, defending, said the offences had devastated the father-of-three’s family.

“If he had recalled even the smallest part of the evening, he would have been the first to admit it,” she said.

“It was a short period of alcohol-filled criminal behaviour.”

He had worked with children, teaching them to DJ.

“He is totally ashamed,” said Miss Power. “It is a complete aberration. He entered a place which should be a sanctuary for women.”

Judge Carey said he was prepared to accept that Greaves now deeply regretted his “seriously criminal” behaviour.

It fell short of rape, he said, but was at the high end of seriousness, adding: “I make it clear, I am departing from the guidelines in this case.”

The judge said he believed Greaves posed no risk to children and said he would not ban him from working with youngsters.

“The reason you offended that night was because, by reason of alcohol, you were totally out of control,” he said. “That is not an excuse. Some might regard it as an aggravating feature.

“What you did had a very real impact on these two women, who didn’t deserve to be treated in the frightening way you treated them.”

Judge Carey added: “I accept that prison will be a more chastening experience for you than it would be for a more hardened 28-year-old, but to prison you must go.”

Greaves will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.
