Motorists have faced hours of delays having originally been told the problem would be cleared by 12.30pm.

National Highways said a diversion route was being established, but it has been complicated due to the feeder road being affected.

Things aren't expected to be cleared until around 5.30pm.

A fire service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a lorry leaking fuel on the M20 London-bound, near to Junction 6 for Blue Bell Hill, Maidstone.

"Three fire engines attended and crews helped to secure the leak, before making the scene safe. No injuries were reported.

"The incident caused the section of motorway to be closed, with diversions put in place for motorists.

"People planning to use the affected route are advised to check for traffic updates for travelling."

Hollingbourne resident Roland Little, who was travelling to a hospital appointment at 11.30am, was stuck in the traffic for around an hour.

He said: "It usually takes me 15 minutes but I was stuck in traffic with everyone trying to get in one lane.

"I don't know why it's taking so long as it's nearly been four hours by now.

"I think I could have taken a mop and fairy liquid and had it done in 20 minutes."

More as we get it.
