Commuters had a slow journey into work today as weather problems continued.

Icy roads were still causing problems. Variable speed limits were in force on the M20.

Snow drifting against the central reservation of the M20 has forced the closure of lane three in both directions between junctions Junction 4 (West Malling) and Junction 2 (Wrotham), although the Highways Agency say there are no significant delays. Normal traffic conditions were expected from 10.30am.

On the M20 westbound between Junctions 8 (Hollingbourne) and 7 (A249 Detling Hill), there were delays of 10 mins due to emergency roadworks to repair a pothole. Two lanes were closed but reopened at 10am.

Side roads in the area were passable with extreme care.

Routes out to the west of the county were slow too. The A228 dual carriageway near East Peckham was down to a single lane and a lorry was in a ditch on the Maidstone-bound carriageway on Colts Hill.

Train users also face problems if they are travelling from Maidstone West station. Their are delays to trains because of animals on the line in the Paddock Wood area.

Council rubbish collections have also been affected by the snow.

Green waste collections have been suspended and there will also be no bulky collections today.

Refuse and recycling collection vehicles have gone out but will only be collecting from roads clear of snow. They will also be attempting collection of Friday’s rounds.

A council spokesman said: "Residents should leave their bins out and we will do our best to catch up as soon as possible."
