UNSUSPECTING pupils at a Maidstone school were sniffed by drugs dogs and searched by police as part of blitz on drugs in schools.

The surprise swoop on pupils aged 13 to 15 at Oakwood Park Grammar School last Friday was organised by Maidstone and Malling police in conjunction with the school.

The pupils were taken out of their form rooms and sniffed by the dogs and 24 were taken aside and searched by police after the dogs smelt something suspicious. One pupil was found with a small quantity of cannabis.

Head teacher Mike Newbould said: "The children's reaction was brilliant. They were fascinated to see how the dogs worked. Even those who were searched were interested to know what the dogs had sniffed on them."

According to Mr Newbould, parents supported the school's decision to get involved in the police scheme.

He said: "We wanted to help those who have a problem, not to punish them. We are anxious to do our utmost to help those involved in drugs and to protect the other students. We know there is a drug culture out there in Maidstone."

The boy who was found with cannabis has been signed up to a support programme and the school has spoken with his family.

Supt Mick Matthews, area commander for Maidstone and Malling Police, said: "I hope this action will send a clear message that wherever this problem exists we will carry out enforcement against it to protect our young people."
