by Helen Fairley

Two teenage lovebirds going on a date to the local Bingo parlour may not sounds like a police matter - but when that date involved rooftop jumping, camourflage and a rope it suddenly attracted the boys in blue.

The 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were arrested after attempting to break into Gala Bingo in Maidstone on Sunday afternoon, claiming they wanted to take some photographs.

The pair, dressed in camouflage gear and armed with a rope, first tried to o kick their way through a door on the top floor. When this failed the hapless pair made their way to the rooftops.

The fire brigade were called after when onlookers witnessed them jumping across the rooftops.

There presence came in very handy moments later when the young Romeo ended up wedged in a fourteen foot hole between the buildings and his Juliet was locked in gated area.

Fire officers retrieved the pair safely to waiting crowds of expectant bingo customers, where they were then arrested by police.

When questioned, the 17 year old boy, who was in possession of a camera said he was a photographer and interested in the architecture in the old cinema and wanted to break in so he could photograph his girlfriend in there.

Both received a formal caution for the damage they caused to the Gala bingo building.

Inspector Susie Harper said: “I am pleased we could bring a swift resolution to the incident so that the community Bingo could go on. I would like to thank the fire brigade for their assistance in rescuing the pair from the rooftops in what was an incredibly irresponsible and dangerous stunt, that could have ended tragically.”

Despite the action going on above them, Bingo lovers soon had their eyes down and the session restarted as soon as the pair were taken away.
