Tortoise stolen from Kent Life farm park in Maidstone during fireworks display

A popular farming attraction has been left in disbelief after a tortoise was stolen during its fireworks display.

Timmy, a three to four-year-old sulcata, native to Africa, was stolen from Kent Life in Maidstone on Sunday.

In a Facebook post, the Lock Lane farm wrote: "We’d really like him returned to us safe and sound so we can provide the specialist care this animal needs.

"If you have Timmy, please give him back (no questions asked)."

Kent Life is a 28 acre site farm park and heritage centre with exhibitions on the county's rural history and a chance to get up close to animals including sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys, goats, poultry, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, ducks, geese and alpacas.

Joe Cain, who has been livestock manager at the farm since May, noticed that Timmy was missing at 5.30pm on Sunday.

He said: "We had our fireworks events on Saturday and Sunday so we were open late.

"The tortoises are kept in our Cuddle Corner area so people can see them and touch them and things like that.

"At 4pm on Sunday afternoon I went in and fed them and they were both definitely there, but at 5.30pm when I locked the door one of them wasn't."

The farm has five tortoises altogether, and Timmy, who they have had for little more than a year, was kept in an enclosure with one other.

The sulcata, also known as the African spurred tortoise, is one of the largest tortoise breeds in the world.

Timmy is about 40cm long and weighs 7kg.

Joe continued: "There is always a staff member in Cuddle Corner but because it was fireworks night it was an incredibly busy night so there were loads of people walking through."

The farm is planning on filling out a police report, however Joe said he's not sure how much they will be able to do.

He said: "Our cameras just show hordes of people going in and out the farm, there's no one obviously holding a tortoise otherwise we would have caught them."

If anyone has information about Timmy's whereabouts, contact Kent Life via Facebook or call them on 01622 763936.
